Little Haiti Community MAKING MAGIC
IN OUR COMMUNITY
The District lies within the Little Haiti and Little River neighborhoods, which are the true sources of creative energy and optimism behind the project. As such, the Magic City Innovation District - Little Haiti® has established the Little Haiti Revitalization Trust - a $31 million endowment committed to the legacy of those who have shaped the character of this unique part of Miami.

The Little Haiti Revitalization Trust will ensure that the authenticity of the area remains true to its roots, resists gentrification that replaces the original culture, provides pathways for affordable housing, and delivers various community initiatives designed to empower local residents and business owners.

At Rawfit, the emphasis on proper form and fitness education is driven by three major pillars: hiring the best staff, utilizing high-end equipment, and limiting class size. This approach allows for a safe and beneficial workout program tailored to each individual's needs.

HISTORY & DNA

THE BEGINNING: LEMON CITY

As one of the earliest local settlements in South Florida, Miami’s Little Haiti and Little River neighborhoods are in an area originally known as “Lemon City”. A name derived from the fragrant and abundant lemon trees and citrus groves the neighborhood became known for.

Today, the DuPuis Building from 1902 remains one of Miami’s oldest standing structures and serves as a monument to those first years. Named for community leader and physician Dr. John G. DuPuis, its masonry vernacular style features pressed metal detailing typical of turn-of-the-century American commercial architecture. A full restoration of this historic building is planned as part of the District’s commitment to preserving and honoring the area’s past.

THE MAGIC CITY IS BORN

In 1925 the City of Miami annexed Lemon City and Magic City entered the vernacular as a nickname for the city. In 1929, the Magic City Tourist Camp, a collection of historic tourist cabins catering to visitors traveling via automobile from northern states, was established.

HAITI FINDS A NEW HOME

From the 1950’s onwards Miami, also known as the Magic City, became an important destination for Haitian immigrants fleeing dictatorship and poverty. United by a shared spirit, these determined people rebuilt new lives while also celebrating and sharing their culture with the rest of the city. The Notre Dame d’Haiti Catholic Church, The Caribbean Marketplace, and iconic murals by the famed Haitian-born artist Serge Toussaint, all remain key cultural touchpoints for Little Haiti and the District.

THE FUTURE COMES CALLING

As the first decades of the 2000s era comes to a close, it is clear that the trajectory of growth in Miami is moving steadily northward – meaning Little Haiti has a unique opportunity to be at the crossroads of progress. Developers purchase multiple parcels of connected property totalling nearly 17 acres with the vision to build an engaging, integrated mixed-use destination that is woven into the very fabric of Little Haiti itself. This concept is what is now known as The Magic City Innovation District – Little Haiti®.
